Your name: Janet Massoglia

Course name: NUR 116 – Pediatric Nursing

Objective assignment will meet:

Describe the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment, and nursing care of various type of congenital heart disease.

Rationale for assignment:

The students struggle to understand the congenital heart defects. I have done the lecture on congenital heart defects six times now, when the students are in class about 40% begin to understand the different defects. On the examination that evaluated students learning – the student’s scores on this portion of the test range 60-70%. As an instructor, I do not think this is an acceptable level of comprehension. I realize, I will never have 100% but I am aiming to increase comprehension / learning to 85%.

Completed worksheets will be worth 2 points toward the test on cardiac defects. When students come to class with the completed work sheet they will be placed in one of four groups. Group size will range from 2-4 students depending on overall class size. Each group will be assigned one of the four categories of the cardiac defects. The group will have 15 minutes to prepare a teaching segment on their cardiac defect to present to the class. A rubric will be developed to evaluate students effectiveness of their presentation.
